Helmsley is an attractive unspoilt market town situated on the banks of the River Rye on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. With its mainly stone buildings, the town is set around the central market square where the weekly market is still held each Friday. From here you can walk through the pretty streets off the square and wander around the interesting and varied shops or take a well earned break in one of the many tea rooms or public houses. You could even stop off for a delicious locally made ice-cream! The shops on offer include galleries, gift shops, antiques, florist, food shops, book shops, furniture and a traditional toy shop. Craft and Antique fairs are also held in the Town Hall. Behind the Market Place runs a stream which you may have seen in photographs of the town.
Dominating the town, the ruins of the dramatic Helmsley Castle, dating back to the 13th Century are proudly stood.
Another popular attraction in this quaint town is the fabulous historic mansion of Duncombe Park which was the home of the Duncombe family until it was bought by Lord Feversham. Throughout the years he has restored the house and it is now open for the general public to enjoy.
The ancient Market Cross is a popular meeting place for walkers at the start of the 109 mile Cleveland Way, which continues through the North York Moors National Park. Of course there are other shorter, less demanding walks around the area including peaceful riverside walks.
The ruins of the Cistercian Rieveaulx Abbey which is one of the many magnificent ruins in the country are also close by and well worth a visit. Looking down on the Abbey, are the ruins of the National Trust run Rieveaulx Temples and Terrace with 18th century landscaped gardens.
Helmsley Walled Garden is a short stroll from the Market Place and is the former 5 acre fruit and vegetable garden of Duncombe Park.
Helmsley Arts Centre situated in the Old Meeting House offers a diverse programme of entertainment for all ages and tastes including music, theatre, cinema, talks and exhibitions throughout the year.
During those warm summer months, Helmsley boasts an outdoor heated swimming pool where you can take a dip if you're brave enough!
